Resource Recycling Technologies Ltd (RRT) scrap metal facility is the largest privately owned scrap metal recycler in the South Island. RRT processes seven million tonnes of recyclable materials per year, which can then be sustainably reused and kept out of the waste stream.

Stormwater runoff from metal storage and processing poses a risk to the Ōpāwaho/ Heathcote River from heavy metals and hydrocarbons contamination. As the site was no longer able to come under Christchurch City Council’s global stormwater discharge consent, a site-specific consent from Environment Canterbury was required.

A suite of consents was necessary at this site including earthworks, dewatering, stormwater discharge to land and stormwater discharge to surface water. e2Environmental were able to deliver these consents by lodging a comprehensive consent application, demonstrating that the site could meet environmental regulations, and by working with Environment Canterbury to resolve complex issues with practical solutions.

e2Environment is uniquely positioned to consent technically difficult industrial stormwater sites.
